Web address overview
Each site on the web is stored on a computer that is part of a larger network. To access a web site, you need to gain access to the computer on which the web site is stored, just as every house has a unique address, similarly every computer on the web is identified by a unique address, known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address. An IP address is a numeric address that specifies a computer’s exact location on the web. You can access a computer on the web by using an IP address, such as 192.168.0.1.
IP addresses link to a corresponding domain name because names are easier to remember than a string of numbers. For example, the domain name corresponding to the IP address 127.0.0.1 might be proseware.com. Web browser can find and display web page using domain name or IP address.
The web site of a domain can be accessed with the help of a special alphanumeric address known as web address, also known as Uniform Resource Locator (URL) (URL), which specifies the protocol to be used and the exact location of the web site. A protocol is a standard method of data transfer between different computers. http://www.microsoft.com/leaming/default.asp In the example http specifies which protocol to use and microsoft.com/learning/default.asp specifies the exact location of the web page, the following table lists the components of the URL.
