1.1 Introduction to the MS Word
In this lecture we’ll learn how to explore MS Word. Let us understand the various important parts of MS Word window.
- Quick Access Toolbar: From here you can access most frequently used commands. You can customize this toolbar according to your comfort.
- Ribbon: Ribbon contains commands have three categories:
Tabs: These displays across the top of the Ribbon and contain group of the commands. For example Home, Insert, Page Layout, etc.
Groups : These act like a organizer for a particular command. Each group name appears below the group on the Ribbon. For example, group of commands related to clipboard, Font, alignment and so on.
Commands : These appears within each group as mentioned above.
Title Bar : This bar lies in the middle and the top of the window. As the name suggest it displays the title of the document.
Ruler Bar : Before we get into the details of ruler bar lets know first what is Ruler and what is it used for!! Ruler is a measuring tool and is used for adjusting indents, the tabs and the width of margins for a document.
MS Word has two rulers – A horizontal ruler and a Vertical ruler.
Horizontal Ruler : It is appears above the document or you can say below the ribbon. It allows you to set tabs within a document.
Vertical Ruler : It is appears on the left edge of the document and it allows you to adjust the top and bottom margins.
File Tab : It is a section on the Office Ribbon that gives you the access to file functions. If you’ll click on the File tab you can explore many of the basic commands such as Open, Save, Save As, etc.
- Ribbon Display Options:
- Dialog Box Launcher: It appears as very small arrow in the lower-right corner of every groups on the Ribbon. If you’ll click on it this button, a dialog box will appear on your screen that provides more options about a specific group.
- Status Bar: It appears on the bottom of the gives you the information about where you are in the document. This bar contains the total number 0f pages, word count, language you’re using for your document.
- Working/ Document Area: This is the blank space where you can work to create your document. While working on the document you’ll see a flashing vertical bar which is called Insertion Point. Insertion point decides where the text will appear when you type.
- View Buttons : Allows you to view your documents in three different ways.
- Zoom Controls : You can apply zoom- in and zoom -out operations on your documents.
